The percent off formulas

Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Percent Off ÷ 100)

  • To apply a percent off, build a multiplier from what you keep: 20% off means you pay 80%, so the multiplier is 0.8.
  • To work backwards from two prices, Percent Off = (Original − Sale Price) ÷ Original × 100.
  • The saving is simply Original Price − Final Price.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick “Work out the price” to apply a percent off, or “Find the % off” to compare two prices.
  2. Enter the price and the percent off — or the original and sale prices.
  3. The final price, your saving, or the percent off appears instantly.

Worked examples

Applying a percent off

20% off a £60 item. You pay 80% of £60: £60 × 0.8 = £48. You save £60 − £48 = £12.

Finding the percent off from two prices

An item falls from £75 to £60. Percent off = (75 − 60) ÷ 75 × 100 = 20%. The saving is £15.

A third off

A £90 jacket is labelled “33% off”. Multiplier = 1 − 33 ÷ 100 = 0.67. Sale price = £90 × 0.67 = £60.30. You save £29.70.

Two successive discounts

A £100 product is 10% off, then another 10% off. First: £100 × 0.9 = £90. Second: £90 × 0.9 = £81. The effective discount is (100 − 81) ÷ 100 × 100 = 19% off — not 20%, because the second 10% applies to the lower price.

Checking a “was/now” price

A sign reads “was £50, now £40”. Percent off = (50 − 40) ÷ 50 × 100 = 20%. The advertised 20% off is correct.
