Percentage Between Two Numbers
See what percentage one number is of another in one step. Enter two values and the calculator shows the first as a percentage of the second, plus the difference between them.
The first number is shown as a percentage of the second. Swap the two values to compare them the other way round.
The percentage between two numbers formula
Percentage = (First Number ÷ Second Number) × 100
- Divide the first number by the second to express it as a fraction of the second, then multiply by 100 to turn that fraction into a percentage.
- The difference shown is the first number minus the second, so it can be negative when the first number is smaller.
- If the first number is larger than the second, the result is over 100% — for example, 150 compared with 120 is 125%.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the first number — the value you want to express as a percentage.
- Enter the second number — the value you are comparing it to.
- The percentage and the difference update instantly.
Worked examples
A part as a percentage of a whole
What percentage is 30 of 120? 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%. The difference is 30 − 120 = −90, meaning the first number is 90 smaller than the second.
A first number larger than the second
What percentage is 150 of 120? 150 ÷ 120 × 100 = 125%. The first number is 25% larger than the second, and the difference is 150 − 120 = 30.
A small share of a large number
What percentage is 8 of 200? 8 ÷ 200 × 100 = 4%. The difference is 8 − 200 = −192.
A score out of a maximum
A student scores 45 out of 60. 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%. The difference is 45 − 60 = −15, the marks short of the maximum.
Equal numbers
What percentage is 50 of 50? 50 ÷ 50 × 100 = 100%. Any number is 100% of itself, and the difference is 0.
Percentage of, percentage change and percentage difference
These three answer different questions. Here is the difference, in plain English.
- Percentage of
- Shows one number as a share of another, with the second number as the base. 30 is 25% of 120.
- Percentage change
- Shows how much a value has moved from an original to a new figure, as a percentage of the original. Use the percentage change calculator when comparing values over time.
- Percentage difference
- Compares two values using the average of the two as the base, with no original. Use it when neither number is clearly the starting point.
