Percentage Calculator
Work out percentages three ways: find a percentage of a number, find what percent one number is of another, or find the whole when you know a part and its percentage. Results update instantly as you type.
The percentage formulas
Percentage of a number = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number
- To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 to make a multiplier, then multiply by the number. 25% becomes 0.25, so 25% of 200 is 0.25 × 200 = 50.
- To find what percent one number is of another, swap the operation: divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. 30 out of 120 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
- To find the whole when you know a part and its percentage, divide the part by the percentage as a decimal. If 50 is 25% of a number, the whole is 50 ÷ 0.25 = 200.
How to use this calculator

Worked examples
Finding a percentage of a number
What is 25% of 200? Turn 25% into a multiplier: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25. Then 0.25 × 200 = 50. So 25% of 200 is 50.
What percent one number is of another
A shop gets 30 returns out of 120 orders. Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%. So 25% of orders were returned.
Finding the whole from a part
You know that 50 is 25% of a number. Divide the part by the percentage as a decimal: 50 ÷ 0.25 = 200. The whole is 200.
A percentage of a money amount
What is 17.5% of £2,400? Multiplier = 17.5 ÷ 100 = 0.175. Then 0.175 × 2,400 = 420. So 17.5% of £2,400 is £420.
A percentage over 100%
What is 120% of 80? This year’s sales are 120% of last year’s 80 units. Multiplier = 120 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Then 1.2 × 80 = 96. The result can be larger than the original when the percentage is over 100%.
Percentage of, percentage change and percentage difference
These three calculations look similar but answer different questions. Here is the difference, in plain English.
- Percentage of a number
- A share of one specific number — “what is 25% of 200?” Use this calculator when you have a percentage and a number and want the amount that percentage represents.
- Percentage change
- How much a value has moved from an original to a new figure, as a percentage of the original. Use the percentage change calculator when you are comparing two values over time.
- Percentage difference
- Compares two values without treating either as the starting point, using the average of the two as the base. Use it when neither number is clearly the original.
